Bir Alman denizaltısı, Kuzey Atlantik'in buz gibi sularında dolaşırken, genç mürettebatı İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nda bir denizaltı subayının yaşadığı dehşet ve klostrofobik hayatı deneyimliyor. Yıl 1942 ve Alman denizaltı filosu, İngiliz gemilerini taciz etmek ve yok etmek için sözde “Atlantik Savaşı”na yoğun bir şekilde katılıyor. Ancak, destroyer sınıfının daha iyi eskortları sayesinde, Alman denizaltıları ağır kayıplar vermeye başlıyor. “Das Boot”, böyle bir U-botun mürettebatının hikayesini anlatıyor. Storyline: 

A German U-boat stalks the frigid waters of the North Atlantic as its young crew experience the sheer terror and claustrophobic life of a submariner in World War II. It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so-called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy British shipping. With better escorts of the destroyer class, however, German U-boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of the crew of one such U-Boat, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers and attempted to accomplish impossible missions, all the while attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.
